DESCRIPTION:                               \nLevel: All levels \nWhen:  9 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, Sept. 14 & 15  (Setup begins 8 a.m. Monday) \nWhere: Cynthia’s Sewing workshop room \nInstructor: Cynthia Newman\, www.cjntextiles.com \nRegistration: Open to guild members July 22\, 2026 \nCost: $130 \nMaterials fee: $20 \nMinimum students = 13      Maximum students = 17 \nColor in Composition is a two-day weaving workshop focusing on thinking creatively about the use of color. Using block designs\, we will explore how block size and proportion\, along with color selection\, work together in a composition.  We will discuss thinking intuitively about color\, using all our senses\, and understanding color theory as a reference tool. While expanding our understanding of color\, we will learn how to create depth and balance in handwoven cloth. \nEight-shaft twill and four to eight-shaft summer & winter drafts will be provided which address design considerations including proportion\, symmetry and asymmetry. Weavers will stay on their own loom\, warping prior to the workshop for a set of napkins or towels.  Each day we will begin with a PowerPoint lecture followed by color exploration and weaving. On the first day\, your exploration with color and treadling variations will open a variety of possibilities which can be incorporated into your finished project on the second day. \nPrior to the workshop I will send out a questionnaire asking about your loom type\, number of shafts and project preference. I will send pre-workshop color notes along with your draft to help you select colors for your warp. \nThe focus of the workshop is exploration and expanding your experience with color. It is designed for weavers of all experience levels with the ability to warp a loom and can accommodate more experienced weavers who want to dive deeper into color and design. \nStudents will warp their loom with 10/2 or 8/2 cotton\, depending on their project. A large selection of colors wound on bobbins will be available as weft to experiment with in class.  \n The guild has 5 table looms available to use for this workshop.  Contact Beth O’Mahony ( equip@coswg.org ) to reserve one. \nLinda Gettmann (treas@coswg.org) has a large supply of 8/2 cotton and some 10/2 cottons available for your use in this workshop.  Cynthia will work with each participant to design their warp colorway and then you can play with an unlimited number of weft colors to find your warp compliments and opposites.  Contact Linda if you’d like to use some of her yarns\, pay only for what you use. \nSee workshop policy here. \nWorkshop participants agree to indemnify\, defend and hold harmless COSWG\, its officers and members\, from all claims arising out of workshop activities.
