SUMMARY:Kiki Dembrow - Presentation: My Weaving Journey
DESCRIPTION:  \nKiki’s tapestry journey began in 2005 and included the exploration of different weaving traditions: From traditional French practices in Aubusson\, France  to the Navajo use of raised outline.  An eclectic group of tapestry artists has been a source of inspiration and problem solving: From Silvia Heyden to Sarah Swett. This slide presentation of her personal journey is in many ways a broad overview of tapestry past and present.  \nBio \nSince 2005\, Kiki Dembrow’s passion has been tapestry. Weaving has become the means by which she explores how to translate the interplay of ideas\, images\, and colors that resonate for her into the language of tapestry. Kiki’s practice includes an on-going study of different techniques from different weaving traditions. Since 2006 her tapestries have been regularly exhibited in American Tapestry Alliance’s small unjuried format at Convergence. Her tapestry Landscape was awarded Jurors Choice by the American Tapestry Alliance and Second Place by the Rocky Mountain Weavers Guild at the Northern Colorado Weavers Guild Fiber Celebration in 2018. She is a founding member of Willamette Tapestry Artists (WTA) and currently the president of the Damascus Fiber Arts School Board. \n  \n  \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://zoom.us/j/91266640116?pwd=K2g0b1hhaU5mNTBkVDIwRTQ4ckdldz09 \nMeeting ID: 912 6664 0116\nPasscode: 974225

SUMMARY:Weaving Tapestry: Beyond Basics - Kiki Dembrow instructor
DESCRIPTION:Registration details:\nWorkshop Dates and Times:\nWednesday\, September 18     1-4 p.m.\nThursday\, September 19         9 a.m. to 12 p.m. & 1-4 p.m.\nFriday\, September 20               9 a.m. to 12 p.m. & 1-4 p.m.\n(Clean-up 4 – 4:30 p.m.)\nOptional lunch available at the Senior Center for $5 cash purchase each day Wednesday\, Thursday\, and Friday.  Registration in advance is required.\n\n\nOn-line registration only\nCOSWG member registration opens on Monday\, July 1 @ noon and closes July 21 @ 11:30 p.m. for $125 (indicate whether you want to purchase lunch) \nLate and non-guild member registration opens on Monday\, July 22 for $155 (indicate whether you want to purchase lunch) \nThere must be at least 12 registered to go forward and space is limited to 12. \nAdditional materials fee:  $5 to be paid directly to the instructor in cash.\n\n\nEquipment & Supplies\nParticipants are expected to bring a loom that is already warped at 8 epi\, 8 inches wide with the possibility of weaving at least 8-10 inches high as well as the weaving tools they usually use including a tapestry needle\, some wool weft\, a pencil\, eraser\, scissors\, and a ruler. The instructor will provide a handout\, different kinds of wool weft to sample\, and materials for creating a cartoon. Two weeks before the workshop begins the instructor will email the participants. \nWorkshop Description\nSuccessful tapestries are well-planned. There is a lot to consider before beginning to weave. In this workshop we will look at how to evaluate a design in terms of its weaveability. What is meant by a weaveable design? Next\, how can this design be interpreted in “weaverly” ways? Which tapestry techniques would best serve this design? Finally\, we’ll look at using a cartoon. Most weavers use some form of cartoon to guide their weaving. \nTo move beyond basics\, participants will focus on adding to their toolbox of weaving techniques by weaving a sampler. We’ll explore different techniques for creating lines – vertical and horizontal\, for weaving smooth curves\, and for achieving gradations. The workshop will include a quick review of basic important practices\, including how to avoid ridges and pulling in\, as well as varied options for securing the weft. Tips for fixing shed problems will be shared. Once their samplers are completed\, participants will apply what they’ve learned to a cartoon they have prepared\, or one provided by the instructor. They should expect to finish their project at home. \nBio\nSince 2005\, Kiki Dembrow’s passion has been tapestry. We will begin with a discussion on how to read and design tablet weaving drafts. Then we will proceed to setting up the cards\, weaving the band\, and end with a discussion of finishing techniques. Along the way\, we will focus on avoiding common pitfalls and sharing tips and tricks for weaving perfect bands. For those interested in learning how to tablet weave. \nMay 14 – Tablet Weaving: Double-card double-turn diagonals \nAlso called “Egyptian” Diagonals\, this workshop will focus on weaving diagonal patterns with tablets.  We will use the circular warp setup\, and learn how to use two packs to create interesting diagonal designs.  Patterns will be provided\, but individual exploration will be encouraged.  No previous tablet weaving experience required. \nJohn Mullarkey Bio: \nJohn is passionate about teaching tablet weaving and exploring new ways to make the art form more contemporary. Tablet weaving is a primitive technique that creates simple weave structures\, but offers great variation in patterning. John loves to push tablet weaving beyond its customary limits to create original and surprising interpretations of traditional structures and designs. He is a nationally recognized teacher\, valued for the patience\, clarity and organization he brings to his classes. After beginning to teach in 2009\, John left a software development career to focus on weaving and teaching full time. \nJohn has won many awards\, is a frequent contributor to national fiber arts publications\, and has authored books (“A Tablet Weaver’s Pattern Book\,” “Tablet Weaving: Egyptian Diagonals\,” et al.) and videos (“Tablet Weaving Made Easy\,” “Double-Faced Tablet Weaving”) about the craft. His work appears in international shows and has been displayed at museums. The popular Schacht Zoom Loom is based on John’s design. \n

SUMMARY:Laverne Waddington - The Backstrap Loom and Weaving in South America / Scholarship presenter - Teresa Shaffer "Dyeing Yarns”
DESCRIPTION:Bio: \nLaverne Waddington has been learning to weave on various kinds of simple looms with indigenous teachers in South America since 1996. In her home in Santa Cruz\, Bolivia\, she combines elements of ethnic design and her own original patterns to create unique pieces on a backstrap loom using the various techniques and structures she has studied in South and Central America as well as with backstrap weavers from Vietnam and Myanmar.\nSince 2010\, she has published eight instructional manuals on the various woven structures and finishing techniques that she has studied and produced a DVD on Operating a Backstrap Loom. \nHer articles on backstrap weaving and indigenous textiles have appeared in Handwoven magazine\, Shuttle\, Spindle & Dyepot\, Piecework\, Tiny Studio Creative Life and Spin Off as well as in the published proceedings of the 2012 and 2016 Braid Society conferences. \nShe has shared her skills and experiences with many visitors to Bolivia over the years and now reaches a global audience with her weaving tutorials and travel tales on her blog. She provides online advice and support to weavers through forums such as Ravelry and Facebook groups and teaches and speaks at guilds and textile conferences around the world. \nPresentation:  The Backstrap Loom and Weaving in South America \nFrom her home in Santa Cruz\, Bolivia\, Australian Laverne Waddington has been traveling since 1996 to meet and study with indigenous weavers from the tropical lowlands of Bolivia to the highlands of Chile\, Peru\, Ecuador and Bolivia\, and from the central valleys of Chile to the coastal regions of Ecuador. \nFascinated by the variety of simple tools and looms that these weavers use to create astonishingly intricately patterned cloth\, she has taken on the humble backstrap loom as her main weaving tool. \nIn this talk Laverne shares her experiences learning to weave in South America\, describes the various kinds of looms she has encountered – especially the backstrap loom – as well as how she has used the acquired skills and know-how in her own work. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://zoom.us/j/91266640116?pwd=K2g0b1hhaU5mNTBkVDIwRTQ4ckdldz09 \nMeeting ID: 912 6664 0116\nPasscode: 974225

SUMMARY:Color Horoscope Weaving by Bonnie Tarses
DESCRIPTION:  \nBio: \nBonnie Tarses—a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design in Textile Design and Art Education\, has been weaving since 1960. Inspired by ethnic textiles\, color symbolism\, and the non-verbal language of color woven as joyous prayer\, Bonnie specializes in functional one-of-a-kind art cloth and private commissions. \nShe operated her studio in Seattle from 1980 to 2010 where she perfected her original techniques: Color Horoscope Weaving and Woven Words and developed a new slant to the ancient technique of Ikat which she calls “Turned Weft Ikat”. During her 30 years in Seattle\, she became active in the Seattle Weavers Guild serving as president in 1993. \nIn 2010\, Bonnie moved to Montana to continue her weaving journey. She served as president of the Seattle Weavers Guild in 2013 and was named a Living Treasure by the Montana Association of Weavers and Spinners in 2016. \nIn addition to sharing her love of weaving by presenting innovative workshops and lectures throughout the U.S. and Canada (now mostly through zoom)\, Bonnie’s work appears in homes and on bodies all over the world. Her current passion\, though\, is developing collaborative origami projects for the betterment of the greater community. \nTo find out more and see images of her work\, check out her website bonnietarses.com and Bonnie Tarses on Facebook and Instagram plus an archival blog\, Weaving Spirit on blogspot. \n  \nColor Horoscope Weaving \nThis program is an overview of my journey from color gamps to Color Horoscope Weaving \nA span of 45 years \nAlthough I have been weaving for 63 years\, the first couple decades were all about exploration: of patterns and structures\, of textures and colors. At last I discovered the interplay of color was my true passion. Over decades of teaching color focused workshops\, I have noticed that a vast majority of weavers are challenged by color. My sincerest hope is that through my words and images your relationship to color will be transformed. \nJoin me on an amazing color journey!  With over 100 delicious images\, I will dazzle your senses and open a door to color possibilities beyond the capabilities of the human eye. The arcane language of astrology is translated into the non-verbal language of color that everyone relates to in a completely unique manner. I superimpose a color wheel over a horoscope (which is merely a map of the sky at a selected time and place. It can be a wedding day\, graduation or this very moment.  I use 12 colors which combine to create over 5 billion color possibilities. Most color gamps produce around 144. How I do this is a complicated process which I continue to refine.  When I first began teaching\, I taught students how to convert their horoscope into a winding draft\, but I quickly discovered that students wanted to leave a workshop with a finished piece.  The only way to achieve completion was the have the students receive their winding draft at month prior to the workshop. In that time they gather the yarn of their choice in the basic color code provided\, wind their warp. And dress their loom and arrive at the workshop ready to weave. \nIn lieu of a workshop\, I offer instruction packets that can be purchased for $50. They include: a horoscope\, a winding draft\, 5 pages of instruction\, 5 pages of support materials and email support for a year. \nPerhaps you will be inspired to create your own
