SUMMARY:Workshop Session 1 – Karen Gelbard: Cut and Sew Your Own Handwoven Jacket/Vest/Top
DESCRIPTION:2-day Workshop \nSponsorship: This workshop is partially sponsored by the Patricia Williams Memorial Fund. Patricia was a spinner\, weaver\, knitter and quilter\, and a member of the Portland Handweavers guild. Central Oregon Spinners & Weavers is grateful to Cherry Williams and the family for their donation. \nInstructor: Karen Gelbard\, theoregonweaver.com \nRegistration: Opens to Guild members on Feb 27 and closes on May 7. \nThe workshop will accommodate 8 students. \nCost: $150 \nMaterials fee: $45\, which includes Pellon\, interfacing\, and other materials. Please pay Karen in cash on the first day of the workshop. \nStudents Bring: Sewing machine in good working order. Paper garment pattern of your choice cut out to your size. Handwoven or commercial fabric: 3-4 yds for a vest or top\, 5 yards for a jacket or longer garment. All fabric should be washed (wet finished) and dried several days before the workshop. Bring any synthetic lining material you might want to use. Bring 1 ½-1 ¾ yds. good cotton fabric that goes with your garment fabric to use for binding. Bring a dress form if you have one. Sharp scissors\, cutting mat and rotary cutter\, tape measure\, seam ripper\, ruler with a cork back\, thread to match fabric\, extra sewing machine needles. Karen will have materials and patterns as well. We will provide irons and ironing boards. \nDescription: For weavers who want to cut and sew their own. This is an intense 2-day experience designing and sewing with handwoven cloth. It explores pattern layout\, individual fit issues\, and creative design solutions. Participants layout\, cut\, and sew their own custom garments with Karen’s guidance. Having their yardage is a prerequisite. Commercial fabric can be used. They need to bring a pattern they want to use and sewing machines they are familiar with and that are in good working order. \nBio: Karen Gelbard\, The Oregon Weaver\, weaves and designs handwoven jackets\, coats\, and scarves. She uses her loom to create color harmonies and textures inspired by living on the Oregon Coast. Her work can be seen online\, at galleries\, and juried art fairs across the country\, where she has received recognition for her handwoven designs. Her favorite activity is rolling out yardage on the cutting table and starting the design process for a new handwoven garment. In addition to designing garments\, Karen has been part of the restoration process at Timberline Lodge\, weaving over 310 yards of upholstery fabric in the historic tradition. Her work has appeared in the Style magazine Tearsheet PDX for four years\, she teaches workshops on garment construction\, researches historic textiles\, and enjoys an occasional trip to Italy to study textiles. \n \nSee workshop policy here. \nWorkshop participants agree to indemnify\, defend and hold harmless COSWG\, its officers and members\, from all claims arising out of workshop activities.
