SUMMARY:Guild Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Fine Gelfand\nThe NOH coat\, a creative approach to limited materials.\nFine used shibori dyed strips as a surface design element but also interwove them for parts of the NOH coat. She will show you how she got from a motley collection of fabric strips to an elegant\, lightweight and visually intriguing coat. \nFine will explain how she broke down the design process into 40 questions that anyone can use for designing anything from a garment to a rug. Fine guarantees a less stressful creative process with the clarity you gain through asking these specific questions. But she does not promise a spectacular result every time! The essence of any creative endeavor will always remain a mystery. Your most important abilities are to tolerate uncertainty (temporarily\, to give serendipity a chance) and to muster the courage to jump off the cliff into creative chaos. \n\nBiography\nFine  Gelfand\,  (pronounced: Feena)\nHue & Dye Textiles \nAs a child in Germany I taught myself to embroider and ever since I have been irretrievably enmeshed in textiles. I was introduced to basic weaving in high school but didn’t own a rigid heddle loom until after I got married and moved to the US in 1967. I immediately wove fabric for a coat and skirt and found that I had to teach myself to sew.  I was a weaver for a long time but since I received my certificate in Textile Decoration from the City & Guilds of London program in 2004 I am primarily a surface designer and delight in creating unique garments\, millinery\, accessories and art for the wall.  I think my talent lies in conjuring new relationships between diverse materials and techniques; perpetually asking: What if…?  Inspired by the overwhelming beauty in nature my work continues to be propelled by a lifelong passion for texture and color in all its forms.  \nRecent shows \n2021 “Yoshiko’s Folly”\, solo show\, shibori hats\, PNQ&FAMuseum \n2021 “Birds of a Feather”\, LaConner Quilt &Fiber Arts Museum \n2020 “Reflections”\, LaConner Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum \n2019 “WISD members Bayview Show”\, Clinton\, WA \n2018 Raising the Surface\, WISD\, La Conner Quilt & Fiber Arts Museum \n2017 Fiber Fusion\, WA Surface Design Assoc.\,  Schack Art Center\, Everett\,  \n2016 Beyond The Surface\, WISD\, La Conner Quilt & Textile Mus. \n2015  WISD at WICA\, WISD members show \n2014 “Out of the Blue”\, La Conner Quilt and Textile Museum\, La Conner\, WA \n2014 “Arts Alive”\, Langley\, WA 2013  The Latimer Quilt and Textile Center\, Life On The Left Edge \n2013 “Fiber Art”\, Schack Art Center\, Everett\, WA \n2012  RAGS\, Wearable Art Show\, Tacoma\, WA \n2012 Texture\, Blue Horse Gallery\, Bellingham\, May 6 – 28\, 2012  \n2010  “The Garden As Muse and Medium”\, collaborative show with photographer Joe Menth\, Fine Balance Imaging Studio\, Whidbey Island\, WA \n2010   RAGS wearable art show\, Tacoma\, WA\, Jurors’ Choice Award \n2009   Exposition Chapeau -Creation\, Rencontres Internationales des Arts du Chapeau\, France
