SUMMARY:Workshop - Karen Gelbard: Trash Bag Garment Design
DESCRIPTION:1 day workshop \nSponsorship: This workshop is partially sponsored by the Patricia Williams Memorial Fund.  Patricia was a spinner\, weaver\, knitter and quilter\, and a member of the Portland Handweavers guild. Central Oregon Spinners & Weavers is grateful to Cherry Williams and the family for their donation. \nInstructor: Karen Gelbard\, theoregonweaver.com \nRegistration: Open to guild members on Feb. 27 and closes on May 5. \nThe workshop will accommodate 8 students. \nCost: Approx. $65. \nMaterials fee: $40\, pay Karen in cash the day of the workshop. \nStudents Bring:  Plastic trash bags of all sizes\, including grocery plastic bags and produce bags.  Bring a roll of colored duct tape in your favorite color if you want.  Karen will have materials as well. \nDescription:  Practicing Design Decisions or Finding Your Inner Designer.  \nThis workshop is for handweavers who want to practice their design skills. We will create a garment using only trash bags. Trash bags of different sizes\, colors\, and styles are used because they are rectangles\, inexpensive\, and easily available.\nBased on the simple format of a trash bag\, we decide what to do for necks\, arms\, and legs. \nFor inspiration\, there will be a review of techniques used by other cultures that turn a rectangle into garment shapes. Cutting\, taping\, braiding\, and laminating plastic bags are examples of the techniques that could be used in this exercise.\nThe workshop will conclude with a fashion show of designs after the session. Participants pair up as designer and model to collaborate. \nBio:   Karen Gelbard\, The Oregon Weaver\, weaves and designs handwoven jackets\, coats\, and scarves. She uses her loom to create color harmonies and textures inspired by living on the Oregon Coast. Her work can be seen online\, at galleries\, and juried art fairs across the country\, where she has received recognition for her handwoven designs. Her favorite activity is rolling out yardage on the cutting table and starting the design process for a new handwoven garment. In addition to designing garments\, Karen has been part of the restoration process at Timberline Lodge\, weaving over 310 yards of upholstery fabric in the historic tradition. Her work has appeared in the Style magazine Tearsheet PDX for four years\, she teaches workshops on garment construction\, researches historic textiles\, and enjoys an occasional trip to Italy to study textiles. \n \nSee workshop policy here. \nWorkshop participants agree to indemnify\, defend and hold harmless COSWG\, its officers and members\, from all claims arising out of workshop activities.

She’s written books and articles\, made videos and tutorials\, and taught workshops and classes all over the world. But she’s most proud of PLY\, which was started on a whim and full lack of knowledge about what she was getting into. SUMMARY:Local Workshop: Rigid Heddle Beginner’s Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is a Beginning Rigid Heddle Workshop with a goal to launch your weaving experience with hands on warping and the knowledge you need to make your first scarf. Lots of tips\, tricks\, and ideas will be shared to make your weaving experience a fun one. \nNOTE: You must have a loom to take this workshop. The guild does have a couple of looms members can check out. \nInstructor: Raylene Keating \nWhen:  9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, Sunday\, February 1  \nWhere: Instructor’s home (see Directory) \nCost: $55 \nNumber of Students: Min.= 3     Max.= 4 \nEquipment/supplies students need to bring: \nInstructor will email a list of supplies to attendees prior to the workshop. \nBio: \nI have been knitting since the 4th grade which came to a near stop during my child rearing days. I learned how to weave at Cat Bordhi’s “Weaving for Knitters” retreats at Friday Harbor in the San Juans starting in 2019. I so appreciated and have leveraged her Zen approach to rigid heddle weaving. My son’s lawn mower sheep contributions opened the world of spinning yarn. I have several rabbit holes in the fiber arts and have explored some more than others such as but not limited to: knitting\, spinning\, weaving\, crocheting\, tapestry\, dying\, and even needle felting. I consider myself a “fiber explorer” always eager to apply my love of learning and what skills I have to new approaches. \nSee workshop policy here. \nWorkshop participants agree to indemnify\, defend and hold harmless COSWG\, its officers and members\, from all claims arising out of workshop activities.

SUMMARY:Mini-Workshop: Deflected Double-Weave Scarf on a Rigid Heddle
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this two-day workshop is to learn how to warp and how to weave a deflected double-weave scarf pattern on the rigid heddle. Students will successfully warp their looms on the first day and start weaving their scarf on the 2nd day sufficient to be comfortable finishing their scarf at home. Students are allowed creative license in selected the yarns they wish to weave with using an appropriate dent-size for the yarns they have selected. This approach allows the students of this workshop to view the same pattern applied with different yarn selections. \nNOTE: This workshop is not for beginners. Students must be familiar with how to warp their loom and how to complete a plain weave project. \nInstructor: Raylene Keating \nBio: \nI have been knitting since the 4th grade which came to a near stop during my child rearing days. \nNumber of Students: Min.= 6      Max.= 10 \nFacility fee:  The facility cost is $30 per day\, $60 total. The facility cost will be split between those who sign up for the workshop. \nEquipment/supplies that the students need to bring: \n\nRigid heddle loom and stand (or clamps to attach to a table)\nTwo heddles with the right dent size for your yarn\nTwo different yarns preferably with different shrink ratios – yarn amts differ based on yarn selected\nWarping peg(s) with clamps (OR warping board if you prefer indirect warping)\nThreading hook\nTwo shuttle stick(s)\nTwo carabiners – 3” size\nEmpty gift paper carboard rolls or paper towel rolls if you have them.\nTapestry needle\nScissors\nA large paper bag or bowl for the floor to hold the yarn you’ll be warping.\nWarp separators – your prefered\nPen or pencil (for taking notes)\nBring your own drinks\nBring your lunch/snacks to share\n\n.\nSee workshop policy here.\n\nWorkshop participants agree to indemnity\, defend and hold harmless COSWG\, its officers and members\, from all claims arising out of workshop activities. \n\n  \n
